කොළඹ, තර්ස්ටන් විද්‍යාලයේ කීර්තිමත් ආදී ශිෂ්‍යයෙකු වන මේජර් ජෙනරාල් සත්‍යප්ප්‍රිය ලියනගේ විශේෂයෙන්ම පාසලේ ක්‍රිකට්, රග්බි පාපන්දු, මළල ක්‍රීඩා යන ක්‍රීඩා ක්‍ෂේත්‍රයන්හි මෙන්ම ශිෂ්‍යභට ඛණ්ඩායමේ ද දක්‍ෂතා පෙන්නුම් කළේය. රග්බි පාපන්දු හා ක්‍රිකට් ක්‍රීඩා ක්‍ෂේත්‍රයට දැක්වූ දායකත්වය අගයමින් එතුමන් සඳහා විද්‍යාලීය වර්ණ ප්‍රදානය කෙරිණි. පාසල් අධ්‍යාපනය සාර්ථකව අවසන් කිරීමෙන් අනතුරුව එතුමන් වර්ෂ 1984 මාර්තු 04 වන දින ශ්‍රී ලංකා යුද්ධ හමුදා නිත්‍ය බලසේනාවට එක්වී කෙඩෙට් නිලධාරීයෙකු ලෙස ශ්‍රී ලංකා යුද්ධ හමුදා විද්‍යාපීඨය වෙතින් මූලික හමුදා පුහුණුව සාර්ථකව අවසන් කර වර්ෂ 1985 නොවැම්බර් 16 වන දෙවන ලුතිනන්වරයෙකු ලෙස අධිකාරීයට පත්ව ශ්‍රී ලංකා සන්නාහ සන්නද්ධ බලකායේ 1 වන විමර්ශන රෙජිමේන්තුව වෙත ඇතුලත් කරන ලදී.

කැඩෙට් නිලධාරි පාඨමාලා අංක - 19 යටතේ යුද්ධ හමුදාවට එක්වී යුද්ධ හමුදා දිවියෙන් විශ්‍රාම ගන්නා අවසන් ජ්‍යෙෂ්ඨ නිලධාරියා වන මේජර් ජෙනරාල් ලියනගේ යුධ පිටියේ දී දැක්වූ නිර්භීතකම වෙනුවෙන් වීර වික්‍රම විභූෂණය (WWV) සහ රණ වික්‍රම පදක්කම (RWP) ඇතුළු අතිවිශිෂ්ට සම්මාන රැසක් හිමිගන්වා ඇත. තවද, එතුමන් යුද්ධ හමුදාවට කළ සේවය අගයමින් පූර්ණ භූමි පදක්කම, උතුරු නැගෙනහිර මෙහෙයුම් පදක්කම, ශ්‍රී ලංකා යුද්ධ හමුදාවේ 50 වන සංවත්සර පදක්කම, ශ්‍රී ලංකා සන්නද්ධ සේවා දීර්ඝ සේවා පදක්කම, රිවී රැස සේවා පදක්කම, 50 වන නිදහස් සංවත්සරය සැමරීම පදක්කම, නැගෙනහිර මානුෂීය මෙහෙයුම් පදක්කම සහ උතුරු මානුෂීය මෙහෙයුම් පදක්කම හිමිගන්වා ඇත.

යුද්ධ හමුදා මාණ්ඩලික ප්‍රධානි ලෙස යුද්ධ හමුදා දිවියෙන් විශ්‍රාම ලබන මේජර් ජෙනරාල් සත්‍යප්‍රිය ලියනගේ යුද්ධ හමුදා මූලස්ථානයේ කර්නල් හමුදා ලේකම්, යාපනය ආරක්‍ෂක සේනා මූලස්ථානයේ බ්‍රිගේඩියර් ප්‍රධාන මාණ්ඩලික නිලධාරී, ආරක්‍ෂක මාණ්ඩලික ප්‍රධානී කාර්යාලයේ ක්‍රියාන්විත සහ සැලසුම් අධ්‍යක්‍ෂ ජෙනරාල්, ආරක්‍ෂක අමාත්‍යංශයේ හමුදා සම්බන්ධතා නිලධාරී සහ යුද්ධ හමුදා මූලස්ථානයේ යුධෝපකරණ මාස්ටර් ජෙනරාල් ඇතුළු මාණ්ඩලික නිලධාරී තනතුරු රැසක් හොබවා ඇත. එතුමන් මේ දක්වා හදාරා ඇති පාඨමාලා අතර තරුණ නිලධාරී පාඨමාලාව, ඉන්දියාවේ උපදේශක පාඨමාලාව සහ ජ්‍යෙෂ්ඨ අණදීමේ පාඨමාලාව, පකිස්තානයේ මධ්‍යම වෘත්තීය නිලධාරී පාඨමාලාව, බංගලාදේශයේ ආරක්‍ෂක සේවා අණ හා මාණ්ඩලික පාඨමාලාව, ඇමරිකා එක්සත් ජනපදයේ සන්නද්ධ නිලධාරී උසස් පාඨමාලාව සහ ඉන්දියාවේ ජාතික ආරක්‍ෂක විද්‍යාල පාඨමාලාව ද වේ. එතුමන්ගේ කීර්තිමත් සේවා කාලය තුළ 4 වන සන්නාහ සන්නද්ධ බලකායේ අණදෙන නිලධාරී, ත්‍රිකුණාමලයේ නගර අණදෙන නිලධාරී, 523 වන පාබල බලසේනාවේ බලසේනාධිපති, සන්නාහ සන්නද්ධ බලසේනාවේ බලසේනාධිපති සහ 55 වන පාබල සේනාංකයේ නියෝජ්‍ය සේනාවිධායක ඇතුළු අණදීමේ තනතුරු රැසක් හොබවා ඇත.

2020 මැයි 31 වන දින සිය වසර 36ක යුධ හමුදා සේවයෙන් විශ්‍රාම යන ශ්‍රී ලංකා යුධ හමුදා මාණ්ඩලික ප්‍රධානී, ශ්‍රී ලංකා සන්නාහ සන්නද්ධ බළකායේ (එස්එල්ඒසි) අණදෙන නිළදාරී තර්ස්ටන් විද්‍යාලයීය කීර්තිමත් ආදී ශිෂ්‍ය මේජර් ජෙනරාල් සත්‍යප්ප්‍රිය ලියනගේ මහතාගේ විශ්‍රාම දිවියට, අපගේ උණුසුම් සුබ පැතුම්!

Major General Liyanage is a proud product of Thurstan College, Colombo where he showed prowess in the field of sports, particularly in Cricket, Rugby Football, Athletics and Cadeting. In recognition of his contribution to the field of Rugby Football and Cricket, he was awarded College Colours for both games. Upon successful completion of the secondary education, he joined the Regular Force of the Sri Lanka Army on 5 March 1984 as an Officer Cadet and completed basic military training at the Sri Lanka Military Academy Diyatalawa before he was commissioned to the prestigious 1st Reconnaissance Regiment of the Sri Lanka Armoured Corps in the rank of Second Lieutenant on 16 November 1985.

Major General Sathyapriya Liyanage, being one of the contemporaries to retire from the Intake-19, is a recipient of several gallantry medals and military decorations, including the highest gallantry medal, Weera Wickrama Vibhushanaya (WWV) and Rana Wickrama Padakkama (RWP) for his bravery in the battlefield. In recognition of his services to the Army, he has also been awarded Purna Bhumi Padakkama, North and East Operations Medal, Sri Lanka Army 50th Anniversary Medal, Sri Lanka Armed Services Long Service Medal, Riviresa Campaign Service Medal with clasp, 50th Independence Anniversary Commemoration Medal, East Humanitarian Operation Medal and North Humanitarian Operation Medal.

The outgoing Chief of Staff as a Staff Officer has served numerous appointments such as Colonel Military Secretary at the Army Headquarters, Brigadier General Staff Security Force Headquarters Jaffna, Director General Operations and Systems at the Office of the Chief of Defence Staff, Military Liaison Officer at the Ministry of Defence and the Master General Ordnance at the Army Headquarters. Some of the military disciplines he has hitherto followed include Young Officers’ Course, Auto Instructor Course and Senior Command Course in India, Mid-Career Course in Pakistan, Defence Services Command and Staff Course in Bangladesh, Armoured Officers’ Advanced Course in USA and National Defence College Course in India. Some of the other significant command appointments that he has held include Commanding Officer of 4th Armoured Regiment, Town Commandant of Trincomalee, Commander of 523 Infantry Brigade and Commander Armoured Brigade.

Major General Sathyappriya Liyanage, a distinguished old boy of Thurstan College, Chief of Staff of the Army and Colonel Commandant of the Sri Lanka Armored Corps (SLAC) retired from his distinguished military service on May 31, 2020 after serving the country for over 36 years.
